1920 Draper-Maynard Co. Sporting Goods Catalog
“This is a 1920 Spring-Summer sports equipment catalog of the Draper-Maynard Co. (better known as D & M) of Plymouth, New Hampshire. This company marketed its products using the "Lucky Dog" logo. The catalog boasts that its baseball gloves are used by many major leaguers (Grover Cleveland Alexander, Muddy Ruel, etc.) and that "Babe Ruth The Home Run King Uses Exclusively The Lucky Dog Goods". There is a full-length picture of The Babe in a pitching pose on the cover although in 1919, the previous year, he played the outfield in 111 games, led the league in home runs with 29 and had fewer pitching appearances with a record of 9 and 5 with the Red Sox. Babe's uniform has pinstripes and red striped socks but no team designation probably because his status was uncertain. 1920 was to be the first year of his great Yankee career and this may be one of the earliest covers of that career. The catalog measures 5 and 3/4 by 7 and 3/8 inches and is printed entirely on glossy stock. It has 48 pages, 24 show baseball equipment-especially gloves. Other sports shown include tennis (5 pages), boxing (4 pages) and the strange swimming attire in style for the times ( 4 pages). The rest of the catalog covers a variety of sports equipment and clothing. It is in vg-ex condition. A neat item for an equipment or Yankee collector. Please ask questions before bidding. Winning bidder pays $5.00 priority mail postage. Payment by check or money order. Sorry, we do not accept Paypal or credit cards.”
